Wolletzsee Loop Trail

Wolletzsee, a recreational area rich in wildlife just outside Angermünde

Wolletzsee is about five kilometers long and up to one kilometer wide, with a surface area of 330 hectares. With its clear water, Strandbad Wolletzsee, boat rentals, and campground, it is a popular recreational area in our state-recognized resort town.

We follow the green dot on a white background along the approximately 17-kilometer-long loop trail.

Start at the Strandbad Wolletzsee

The best starting point for a hike is the parking lot at the Strandbad Wolletzsee. From June through August, the StrandbadBus (Line 452) runs here from the Angermünde train station. If you’d like to start your hike in Angermünde, head to the Märkischer Landweg trail (blue cross on a white square) at the Angermünde train station, hike a short distance toward Templin, and after about three kilometers, you’ll reach the Wolletzsee Loop Trail. This extends the hike to 23.5 kilometers.

Chestnuts, Church, Cormorants

On the southern shore of Lake Wolletzsee, the route leads from the Strandbad Wolletzsee through the Angermünde City Forest to the Adlerquelle spring, then continues through deciduous forest and meadows to a chestnut-lined dirt road that leads to Altkünkendorf. On the hill before this “chestnut avenue,” there’s an idyllically situated rest area where you can enjoy a picnic. If you look through binoculars, you can spot a roosting colony of cormorants in the trees along the shore of Wolletzsee.

A Detour to Altkünkendorf

It’s worth taking a detour to Altkünkendorf to see its 13th-century village church and the information center for the Buchenwald Grumsin UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The route continues past Heiligen See and across the Welse River, along a chestnut-lined avenue to Wolletz.

When in Wolletz, be sure to stop for a break at the regional organic café “KaffeeKonsum.” You can look forward to delicious homemade cakes and light meals. Below the former hunting lodge—which belonged to Erich Mielke’s hunting residence in 1960 and now houses the GLG Wolletzsee Specialized Clinic—the lakeside path runs along the shore and for a short stretch through the wild and romantic Welsetal valley back to the Strandbad Wolletzsee.
