The Schorfheide. What a forest!

Bike route: approx. 40 km
Start: Angermünde, Friedenspark
Destination: Chorin, Train Station

About two-thirds of the Schorfheide consists of forest, some of which contains very old trees. Electors, kings, and emperors used the forest for recreation, to conduct state affairs—and, time and again, for hunting. Since 1990, the Schorfheide has been part of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO model region for the harmonious coexistence of people and nature.

On this bike tour, you’ll feel the heartbeat of the Schorfheide. Unusually beautiful nature and culture projects await you amid an enchanting landscape.

The charming little half-timbered church in Glambeck, a village known for its historic and cultural heritage. Next to it is the Radler-Point, a popular spot for cyclists to take a break in the middle of the forest. The picturesque village of Parlow, known as the “Crane Village,” with its historic granary; or the observation deck of the BIORAMA project in Joachimsthal.

Historic City Center of Angermünde

The journey begins in the tranquil farming town of Angermünde. This state-recognized resort town, with its historic center, charms visitors with its lovingly restored half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and medieval churches. With the goal of “beneficially combining the old with the new,” Angermünde’s historic town center was restored after 1990 with great attention to detail. Today, it is a charming small town with a fascinating history and vibrant culture, just a 50-minute train ride from Berlin.

A stroll through the town is definitely worth it. The old city wall with the Pulverturm, the Franciscan monastery church, St. Marien Church, City Hall, and much more. “Ketzer-Angermünde” has plenty of stories to tell.

NABU Blumberger Mühle Nature Discovery Center: A regional highlight for young and old alike!

You’ll leave our small town of Angermünde behind and cycle along Lake Mündesee, accompanied by the magnificent international boulder art installation “Stone Age of Modernity.” The tour takes you past the organically run Kerkow estate and then includes a detour to the NABU Blumberger Mühle Nature Experience Center. You simply can’t miss it!

Here, through various exhibits and a large outdoor area featuring many animals and a playground, visitors of all ages are shown—in a loving yet factual way—just how wonderful unspoiled nature is and why we must protect our own little corner of the world.
Exploring the center isn’t just a lot of fun—it also works up an appetite: Grab a bite to eat at the organic restaurant “Blumberger Mühle,” and then it’s off to the next stop.

A swim at the idyllic Wolletzsee near Angermünde

Passing the fish ponds behind the Blumberger Mühle and the Wolletzsee with its clear water, you’ll cycle to Glambeck. Along the nearly deserted lakeside promenade in the village of Wolletz, there are natural access points to the lake that invite you to take a dip. The regional organic café KaffeeKonsum is a great place to take a break. The former village store features a small exhibition of “everyday goods” from the GDR era.

Through the enchanting Schorfheide to the venerable Chorin Monastery

The journey continues through the forests of the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Once a popular hunting ground, it is now one of Germany’s largest nature reserves and its largest organic farming region. The focus here is on the harmonious coexistence of people and nature.

The Glambeck Bicycle Church, a small half-timbered church along the bike path, hosts rotating exhibitions and concerts. In town, the Taubenturm, which houses a museum commemorating Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von Redern, is well worth a visit. The route continues to the picturesque village of Parlow, known as the “Crane Village,” with its historic granary. And for those who dare: the impressive vaulted cellar built of fieldstones serves as a marriage license office.

A Break for Swimming at Grimnitzsee

Take junctions 52/51 to reach Joachimsthal. While you’re there, it’s worth making a detour to the BIORAMA observation deck. A spectacular panoramic view of the vast Schorfheide awaits you!
Drive along Grimnitzsee until you reach Althüttendorf. Don’t forget to go for a swim! In Althüttendorf, take one last look at the beautiful Grimnitzsee, then continue on to Senftenhütte.
Here, the bike path first takes you 1.5 km along the federal highway before turning right onto a quiet road.

Once you arrive in the beautiful village of Chorin, be sure to set aside time for a detour to the Cistercian monastery (Map p. 83). Like the Franciscan monastery church in Angermünde, it stands as an example of exemplary development in German historic preservation. In addition, the idyllic monastery courtyard with its café invites you to linger.

Junction 82/81 will take you back to the train station.
