From Friedenspark (Map 11) straight to Klosterstraße… Here, at the Franciscan monastery church, the monastery tour really begins. Apart from Klosterplatz and the remnants of buildings along the city wall, only the imposing church remains from the former monastery complex dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Today, these relics of mendicant order architecture serve, among other things, as unique backdrops for historical theatrical city tours, concerts, or outdoor movie screenings.

Angermünde captivates visitors with its historic town center and vibrant arts and culture scene

As a founding member of the working group “Cities with Historische Stadtkerne in the State of Brandenburg,” Angermünde seized the unique opportunity after 1990 to restore its historic buildings. Today, this state-recognized resort town is a charming small town with a fascinating history and a vibrant culture.

As one of the oldest half-timbered houses in Angermünde, Haus Uckermark was fully renovated in 2020 with the usual attention to detail.

True to the motto “Combining the old with the new in a way that benefits everyone,” the Angermünde Museum and the Tourist Information Office have found a home here.

Tip: A Silent Tour of the Old Town

The enamel signs in Angermünde Red invite visitors to explore the town at their own pace. The signs tell the stories of notable buildings and their residents.

Parsteiner See – Excellent Water Quality and Unspoiled Nature

Back at the roundabout (Map 11), cycle out of town via Augustenfelde to Herzsprung (Map 1), and you’ll find yourself in one of Germany’s largest protected areas, the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Passing through wild hedgerows and meadows, the bike path winds its way over gentle hills with beautiful viewpoints along Parsteiner See. With an area of 1,100 hectares, it is the third-largest natural lake in Brandenburg. Its true hallmarks, however, are its clean water and its natural, shallow shoreline. Ideal for small children!

On the Pehlitzwerder Peninsula, you can see the foundation walls of the first Cistercian monastery in Chorin.

Time for a swim!

The route continues along Ktp. 2—always winding through the gentle ups and downs of the rolling hills, the scenic hallmark of the Uckermark region, shaped by the Ice Age. You’ll reach the idyllic village of Bölkendorf, nestled among hills, meadows, and lakes.

Passing the wild hedges that line the road, through the village of Parstein (Map Sheet 17). Behind the church, the monastery tour continues toward Brodowin.

Keep Parsteiner See firmly in sight as you continue cycling through natural areas rich in biodiversity and varied landscapes—the kind found in Germany only in protected areas these days.

Cycle mindfully through the Uckermark—take your time. Go with the flow, explore, and enjoy… the Schorfheide is definitely worth a stop. Forest bathing. Recharge your batteries. Pause for a moment. Listen to the sounds of nature… what a forest!

Tip: The Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve is Germany’s largest contiguous organic farming area. The village of Brodowin (which gave its name to the successful organic brand “Brodowin”) invites you to see the organic farm for yourself. No matter the season, the small country kitchen has something to satisfy both big and small appetites.

Chorin Abbey

Passing by the Chorin train station (Map 81), we head to the Cistercian monastery, our second cultural highlight on this tour (Map 83)!

The former three-nave monastery church captivates visitors with its distinctive west facade and elaborate brick decoration; the west wing features murals from the early 14th century.

What really makes you want to linger, however, is this special, somehow magical atmosphere. This impressive complex of early Brick Gothic architecture—this magnificent cultural heritage—captivates visitors. It inspires a sense of humility. Park your bike and let the tranquility of the monastery wash over you. Inside the monastery, in the beautifully landscaped courtyard, or in the cozy monastery café.

Tip: The concerts of the “Choriner Musiksommer” are among Brandenburg’s most popular cultural events.

Enjoy a leisurely tour of the monastery on a rental bike—you’re welcome to ride just one way. For example, take the RE 3 regional express to Chorin and rent a bike or e-bike there. In Angermünde, return your bike at the train station
(where you can catch the RE 3 again).
