Reading at Grumsin Fairy Tale Forest

Roland Schulz will read from his fairy tale “The Conference of the Trees,” which is set in Grumsin. Here in the World Natural Heritage Forest, trees from 18 European countries gather to devise a plan to inspire people to take action against climate change. Their efforts are in vain—until children take matters into their own hands. Risking their lives, they join forces with the trees to lead the world toward a green future. Nature guide and author Schulz has been a part of the Grumsin for 33 years; he will read from the fairy tale, show photographs of the old beech forest, and share stories from this forest that has been a part of his life.

You can experience the birds of the reed beds up close during our bird banding event. Most of us have seen a bird with a ring on its leg at some point. But what exactly is the purpose of this? A great deal of information can be gleaned from a ringed bird. Dr. Martin Flade, former director of the UNESCO Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and editor of the journal “Die Vogelwelt – Beiträge zur Vogelkunde,” volunteers his time to band birds here on the grounds of the NABU Nature Discovery Center Blumberger Mühle. He offers insights into this fascinating work. It is only through bird banding that we can trace their migration routes. Where do the reed warblers of Blumberger Mühle spend the winter, and which routes do they take to get there? Some birds, such as rails, live very secluded lives, and reed warblers, in particular, are so numerous in the reeds that a census is only possible through banding. You’ll also have the rare opportunity to get a close-up look at these hidden reed bird species. You’ll gain insight into their physiology, and we’ll show you how to distinguish reed warblers by their wings and legs.

Nature Time: Out and About with Six-Legged Friends
July 30 – August 1, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Discover the buzzing and humming world of insects. During a guided tour, you’ll learn about the diversity of insects in our meadows, and we’ll show you how to support insects in your own garden and which plants are particularly insect-friendly. This event is primarily aimed at adults and the program is the same on all three days.

Family Time: A Visit to the Wild Bees
August 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Experience the fascinating world of insects and discover why wild bees play such a special role. At 11:00 a.m., we’ll set out on a short guided tour for children and families to learn about wild bees. We’ll explore how insect nesting aids can help these six-legged creatures and get to know life in the meadow. From 1:00–3:00 p.m. , we have a very special program. Illustrator and author Faezeh Shakoori will take children on a journey into the creative world of insects during a workshop. Together, they’ll design comic and cartoon characters based on various species of wild bees.
Throughout the day, hands-on stations invite visitors to play and do crafts.

Discovery Evening: Bats—Secret Hunters of the Night
August 29, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
On International Bat Night, you can immerse yourself in the fascinating world of these agile insectivores. Bat expert Jörn Horn will take us on a journey into the fascinating world of these nocturnal hunters through engaging presentations. During net captures, you’ll have the chance to observe the bats up close.

Nature Time: The Orchard Meadow Habitat
September 3–5, 2026, 2:00–4:00 p.m. each day
Orchard meadows are part of our traditional cultural heritage and, at the same time, valuable hotspots of biodiversity. They provide habitat for numerous animal and plant species and are a prime example of how natural and cultural landscapes can coexist in harmony. Together, we’ll discover just how valuable this habitat is for many animals and plants and what each of us can do to help protect it. We’ll also press fresh juice from the variety of apple varieties on our grounds. This activity is primarily aimed at adults and is the same on all three days.

Family Time: From Apple to Juice
September 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
On our discovery tour through the orchard meadow, we’ll explore its diversity and press fresh apple juice from heirloom varieties. This is an open-to-the-public event. You’re welcome to drop by for individual activities.

Fall Festival & Regional Market September 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
To celebrate Regions Day, our traditional fall festival and regional marketwill take place again this year on the grounds of the Blumberger Mühle under the theme “Roots That Connect.” Together with the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve Administration, we invite you to an eventful day. At our regional market, you can experience the abundance of products grown in the Uckermark and chat with the producers. You can look forward to excellent fish from Angermünde, plants, and other specialties.
We’re also looking for this year’s Pumpkin Kings and Queens again. As in previous years, we’ll be selecting not only the largest but also the most unusual pumpkin. Whether it’s zucchini, pumpkin, or cucumber, we’d love to see many of you come together to showcase the diversity of the Uckermark’s garden produce. So if you’ve discovered particularly unusual varieties, growth forms, or even whimsical pumpkins in your garden, you’re cordially invited to enter them in the contest. Admission is free on this day.
