Mündesee Loop Trail

Circular Hiking Trail: 8 km
Start: Angermünde, Mündesee Promenade
Markings: red enamel sign reading “Mündesee Rundweg”

The leisurely walk around Lake Mündesee can be easily combined with a stroll through the historic town center of Angermünde. Just a few steps from the market square, the Mündeseerundweg trail circles the lake for about eight kilometers. It’s also suitable for a short bike ride and, in some sections, for inline skaters.

A loop trail for the whole family

The trail around Lake Mündesee is a popular hike for everyone: Angermünde residents and visitors alike, people who need some fresh air, or those who want to start or end their day with a unique sunrise or sunset over the water. The light is always different, and the views are always changing.

Start your hike at the market, then walk along the canal, past the “Hotel am Seetor,” to the lakeside promenade. From the pier over Lake Mündesee, you’ll have a sweeping view of the countryside. This is where the loop trail begins, following the lakeside promenade with its hard-stone sculptures.

The Stone-Rich Lakeside Promenade

It’s always “the Stone Age” along the lakeside promenade—here you can admire huge stone sculptures made from Ice Age boulders. These are large stones left behind in the Uckermark by the last Ice Age, some 10,000 years ago. International stone sculptors have created unique works of art from these granite boulders.

View of the Angermünde skyline

A few meters further on, the now-paved section of the Uckermärkischer Radrundweg leads to a residential area. Passing the houses on the right, the route continues past the railroad tracks through the rolling countryside. From a hilltop featuring the “Lighthouse” sculpture, you’ll have a fantastic view across the lake to the silhouette of Angermünde’s historic town center, with St. Mary’s Church and the Franziskanerkloster.

A Break by the Lake

The path leads back to the lakeshore through a bungalow community. (Cyclists should follow the paved path straight ahead toward Dobberzin and later turn right toward the Old Town.)
The hiking trail continues along the lake. Several small lakeshores and meadows are perfect for picnics or swimming. With a little luck, you might spot some gray herons here. The trail crosses a small wooden bridge and winds past the weekend cottage community back to the historic town center of Angermünde.

The “Hungerstein”

The “Hungerstein” lies in the middle of Lake Mündesee, which got its name in earlier times, when a drought still meant famine. Whenever there was too little rain, the water level of Lake Mündesee would drop so low that the stone in the middle became visible. Not a good sign—famine loomed. Today, if you look through the gap between the two stones standing close together in Joachim Karbe’s sculpture “Segel mit Durchsicht” (Sail with a View), you can spot the “Hungerstein” in the lake.
By the way, to stave off hunger, it’s worth stopping by the restaurant “Zum Hungerstein” at the “Hotel am Seetor.” During the summer months, a cozy courtyard invites you to relax.
