"Living World Heritage" – Guided Tour of the Buchenwald Grumsin

The hike begins in the idyllic village of Altkünkendorf, at the historic fieldstone church. Soon we reach the forest. Sometimes through deep gorges, sometimes along a ridge, the trail follows the boundary of the core zone of the World Natural Heritage site. The deeper we hike into the forest, the more pronounced the glacial landscape becomes, and the more the magic of the mighty, ancient beech trees unfolds. How small we humans are!
What’s particularly fascinating is that we get to witness how a forest, when left to its own devices, regains its natural dynamics and how wilderness slowly returns.

With a little luck, you might spot traces of fallow deer and hares and hear the kingfisher and the great spotted woodpecker.

Passing by forest lakes, marshes, and small bodies of water, we arrive at the artists’ barn, Galerie & Atelier Louisenhof No. 2. During the summer months, it’s a wonderful place to linger and enjoy art, coffee, and cake and/or homemade lemonade…

We continue our hike along the historic cobblestone road from Luisenhof through varied cultural and natural landscapes to Altkünkendorf. But not without casting one last—for now—joyful glance at the stately Buchenwald Grumsin.

You should plan on spending about 3 hours on the tour; the route is approximately 5 km long.
