KaffeeKonsum in Wolletz

In 1969, on the 20th anniversary of the GDR, Wolletz received a new retail outlet, the “Daily Necessities” Konsum. For over forty years since then, the Konsum has not only provided the residents of Wolletz with daily necessities—the small store has also served as a gathering place where people exchanged news.

When the store closed in 2009, all of that was gone. The village center no longer existed, nor was there another one to take its place. All that remained was a somewhat run-down building bearing the distinctive inscription “Daily Necessities,” still in its original condition. It’s a popular photo spot for cyclists on the Radweg Berlin-Usedom.

It wasn’t long before the idea arose to breathe new life into the building. The plan was to create a café for villagers, cyclists, clinic visitors, and everyone else. Lisa Fiege took on this challenge, completely renovated the building from the ground up, and in doing so preserved its very special charm. In May 2012, the café opened its doors and immediately attracted many friends and guests. A display case featuring everyday items from the GDR era also serves as a reminder of its original character.
