Historische Stadtkerne 1 – Angermünde and Templin

This tour offers the charming landscapes of the Uckermark and the architectural heritage of its historic town centers, which are well worth seeing. It is a section of the supraregional route “Historische Stadtkerne – Route 1.” You’ll ride from Angermünde through the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve to Templin. This day trip connects two towns with Historische Stadtkerne and follows well-maintained bike paths for about 50 kilometers through a gently rolling landscape of forests and lakes. The Uckermark is just like something out of a picture book.

Historic City Center of Angermünde

The journey begins in the tranquil farming town of Angermünde. This state-recognized resort town, with its historic center, charms visitors with its lovingly restored half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and medieval churches. With the goal of “beneficially combining the old with the new,” Angermünde’s historic town center was restored after 1990 with great attention to detail. Today, it is a charming small town with a fascinating history and vibrant culture, just a 50-minute train ride from Berlin.

A stroll through the town is definitely worth it. The old city wall with the Pulverturm, the Franciscan monastery church, St. Marien Church, City Hall, and so much more… “Ketzer-Angermünde” has plenty of stories to tell.

Tip: A Silent Tour of the Old Town

The enamel signs in Angermünde Red invite visitors to explore the city at their own pace. The signs tell the stories of significant buildings and their residents.

Creative Angermünde

An artistic market fountain straight out of a picture book, the Mündesee Promenade with the international hard-stone gallery “Stone Age of Modernity,” a heretic sticking his tongue out at the monks, a gate that is both closed and open, and city gates recreated in stone — Angermünde invites you to interpret this free artistic expression for yourself. NABU Blumberger Mühle Nature Discovery Center: A regional highlight for young and old alike!

You’ll leave our small town of Angermünde behind and cycle along Lake Mündesee, accompanied by the magnificent international boulder art installation “Stone Age of Modernity.” The tour takes you past the organically run Kerkow estate and then includes a detour to the NABU Blumberger Mühle Nature Experience Center. You simply can’t miss it!

Here, through various exhibits and a large outdoor area featuring many animals and a playground, visitors of all ages are shown—in a loving yet factual way—just how wonderful unspoiled nature is and why we must protect our own little corner of the world.
Exploring the center isn’t just a lot of fun—it also works up an appetite: Grab a bite to eat at the organic restaurant “Blumberger Mühle,” and then it’s off to the next stop.

A swim at the idyllic Wolletzsee near Angermünde

Passing the fish ponds behind the Blumberger Mühle and the Wolletzsee with its clear water, you’ll cycle to Glambeck. Along the nearly deserted lakeside promenade in the village of Wolletz, there are natural access points to the lake that invite you to take a dip. The regional organic café KaffeeKonsum is a great place to take a break. The former village store features a small exhibition of “everyday goods” from the GDR era.
The Glambeck Bicycle Church, a small half-timbered church along the bike path, hosts rotating exhibitions and concerts. In the village, the Taubenturm, which houses a museum, invites visitors to pay tribute to Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von Redern.

Through the Schorfheide to Friedrichswalde Holzschuhen

The journey continues through the forests of the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Once a popular hunting ground, it is now one of Germany’s largest nature reserves and its largest organic farming region. The focus here is on the harmonious coexistence of people and nature.

Can you hear them clattering and clacking? Those are the wooden shoes from Friedrichswalde. Even today, the “Klappertingers” remain a tourist icon of the town. At the Clog-Making Experience Center, which features a demonstration workshop, clogs are once again being made based on the design of the “Holländer Kähne”—as the clogs are nicknamed.

Time for a swim! Before we continue on toward Templin, let’s take another dip in the cool water. Krummer See is right next to the village.

Welcome to Templin

Near Lake Lübbe, the bike path leads to Templin. Upon arriving in Templin, the medieval town center immediately impresses with its cozy atmosphere. The fully restored city wall is an impressive 1,700 meters long and is the most magnificent structure in this culturally rich small town.
