Hiking along the Buchenwald Grumsin UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site: Tour 2
Hiking route: 7.2 km (approx. 2.5 hours)
Starting point: Geopark Visitor and Information Center, Groß-Ziethen
Trail marker: Green beech leaf on a white background
This tour begins and ends at the Geopark Visitor and Information Center in Groß-Ziethen.
Tip! Make sure to set aside a little time before the hike to check out the “Ice Age Experience” exhibit. It’s a real treat—for us and our kids! It’s fun and educational.
You approach the forest through an open field landscape. Before entering it, you pass the protected, abandoned stone-quarry near Sperlingsherberge. Here, huge boulders bear witness to the events of the Ice Age.
At first, the trail passes through the buffer zone, which is used for forestry and is therefore home to a variety of beech trees of different ages. The trail then continues into the World Natural Heritage Site.
The nature reserve is accessible only as part of a guided tour led by a knowledgeable nature guide. The “A Primeval Forest Takes Shape” tour is offered year-round on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month
(Bookings: Tourismusverein Angermünde e.V.)
On the way back—while still in the forest—it’s worth taking an unmarked turnoff to the right toward Schwarzen See, which is ideal for one last rest stop. As soon as you leave the forest behind and your gaze sweeps across the gentle, rolling terminal moraine landscape, you’ll soon reach your starting point, Groß-Ziethen, again.
