Stolper Grützpott Panorama and Unteres Odertal National Park
Bike route: 29 km
Start: Friedenspark Angermünde
Marker: brown tower with the inscription “Grützpott Radrundweg”
Rolling hills—the hallmark of the glacially shaped Uckermark region
A dynamic round-trip hike where you’ll discover why people talk about the hilly Uckermark. As long as you’re in average shape, the hike should be manageable for everyone. You’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of the countryside.
A stop for swimming at Parsteiner See—top-notch water quality and unspoiled nature
You’ll start at Friedenspark (intersection (Ints. 11)) and ride past the zoo toward Schmargendorf (Ints. 3). After a good four kilometers, you’ll reach Herzsprung on Parsteiner See. With an area of 1,100 hectares, it’s the third-largest natural lake in Brandenburg. Its true hallmarks, however, are its clean water and its natural, shallow shoreline.
Tip: With its sandy beach and shallow water, it’s ideal for small children.
Keep cycling toward the Oder
The route continues through a picture-perfect Uckermark landscape: fields, meadows, and hills. It looks different in every season and at every time of day. You’ll now continue on toward the Oder River. Your route takes you along the bike path through Neukünkendorf, through the Gellmersdorf nature reserve, and on to Stolpe (Map Sheet 9). Before reaching your destination, there are still a few climbs to tackle before a descent takes you into this historic town.
Panoramic view of the Untere Odertal
Impossible to miss and something of a “landmark” for Stolpe: the “Grützpott,” visible from afar on the hilltop. High above the Oder Valley, this imposing tower castle can be seen from a great distance. Enjoy a unique view of the Unteres Odertal from there.
You’ll also see the route of the Oder-Neiße-Radweg, which runs along the dike between the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthaler Waterway and the Oder River. Depending on your mood, preference, and fitness level, you can continue on this long-distance bike path for a few more kilometers through the impressive polder landscape (it’s about 17 kilometers to the national park town of Schwedt; from there, you can also take the train back to Angermünde) or stay on the Grützpott Cycling Loop, which leads back to Angermünde via Crussow and Dobberzin, circling around Lake Mündesee.
Make Your Trip Perfect! Regional Art and Tradition
The path up to the Stolper Turm winds through the village, past the courtyard of sculptor and artist Lars Wilhelm. Here, the beauty and strength of wood and stone are on full display.
If you visit us at Easter, you can witness a long-standing tradition—and, of course, take part in it: During “Walleien”—an originally Slavic fertility ritual—hundreds of colorful eggs tumble down the slopes of the “Grützpott” at Easter. The tower itself, with an outer diameter of 18 meters, is Germany’s thickest keep. The Grützpott is a real tourist attraction for the region. Various enthusiastic guides lead tours through the tower, showcasing its living quarters and dungeon.
By Bike from the Oder Dike to Angermünde
If you’re cycling downstream on the Oder-Neiße-Radweg and the “Grützpott” comes into view on your left—you can’t miss it—you shouldn’t miss out on an exciting stop in Stolpe. If you feel like it, take a break from the river for a few hours (or days).
Tip: You can catch fresh fish for your barbecue at the Stolpe Ponds—you’re guaranteed to catch something!
Drive back via Crussow (Map 12) and Dobberzin (Map 14) to the state-recognized resort town of Angermünde, with its lovingly restored old town. A stroll through the historic old town is definitely worth it!
