Field Trip: "Herbs and Colorful Wallflowers at the Foot of the Grützpott"

The gently rolling meadow landscape around the Stolper Turm is colorful and teeming with biodiversity. But it’s not just herbs and flowering plants that you can marvel at and learn about here. Our herb walk up to the old defensive tower takes us along shady paths past old trees and shrubs. Many of these plants and woody specimens have long been important for nutrition and in herbal medicine.

A vitamin C boost for between meals: Fold the leaf tightly and pop it in your mouth!

Take the stinging nettle, for example. Every child knows it—it stings, and it’s often unwelcome in gardens. We would have eradicated it long ago if it weren’t so resilient!

Yet the stinging nettle is an ancient fiber plant, a time-honored medicinal plant—the best remedy for rheumatism right on our doorstep—and an important food source for both humans and animals! And a leaf, plucked correctly and folded tightly, is a fitness booster when you’re out on the trail.

Of course, there’s a herbal remedy for that painful “Zengeln”! The wise saying, “There’s a herb for everything,” didn’t come about by chance.

After this tour, you’ll see many a little herb in a whole new light.

Our walk is capped off by the breathtaking view of the national park and the Oda Valley from the observation deck at the very top.
