But so that you may understand where all this error originates—those who condemn pleasure and those who praise pain—I will lay the whole matter bare, and I will explain those very things that were spoken by that inventor of truth and, as it were, architect of the blessed life. For no one would ever endure, hate, or flee from pleasure itself simply because it is pleasure, but rather because great pains follow those who do not know how to pursue pleasure with reason. Nor is there anyone who loves, embraces, or seeks to obtain pain itself simply because it is pain, but rather because there are times when, through toil and pain, one seeks some great pleasure. For, to put it mildly, who among us would willingly undergo the laborious exercise of the body unless it were to yield some benefit? But who would justly reproach the one who seeks to be in that pleasure, from which no trouble results, or the one who flees from pain because no pleasure is to be found in it?
