NABU Blumberger Mühle Nature Discovery Center:
Discover the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve through play

The bike path along Lake Mündesee leads out of the city and into nature. Just cycling along the lakeside promenade won’t be enough with kids of all ages. There’s simply too much here to play with, discover, and try out. Via Kerkow, you’ll then reach the NABU Blumberger Mühle Nature Experience Center. Be sure to set aside plenty of time for family fun here.

Exhibits on local nature and biodiversity, designed for children, bring these topics to life. Outside, the trails lead past sunbathing marsh turtles and impressive beaver dams. From the well-camouflaged observation towers, visitors can spot ospreys and cranes. The large play area with a water feature and a maze is especially exciting for children.

The route takes you along pastures dotted with beautiful black Angus cattle—a real sight to behold!—from the organic farm Gut Kerkow to Wolletz. Time for a swim! Just before you leave town, a path on the left leads to Wolletzsee, where you can enter the water. The route continues to Altkünkendorf to the Buchenwald Grumsin World Natural Heritage Site information center.

Buchenwald Grumsin World Natural Heritage Site Information Center: Get informed first, then go hiking!

A highlight of the tour for young and old alike is the Buchenwald Grumsin, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The Grumsin is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site “Carpathian Beech Forests and Ancient Beech Forests of Europe” and is well on its way to becoming a true primeval forest. However, the hiking trails in the Grumsin are not suitable for biking. It’s best to leave your bike at the information point in Altkünkendorf and explore the Grumsin on foot along the World Natural Heritage site. Please stay on the marked “Buchenblatt” hiking trails.

TIP: Altkünkendorf is also home to the iconic Grumsiner Brennerei. Here, old, local varieties of grains and fruits are transformed into fine brandies.

Horses, cows, calves, and other animals

From Altkünkendorf, the route goes through Zuchenberg, past cow pastures, to Schmargendorf.

Take a break at Hemme Milch to enjoy some delicious cake, pet the cows and calves, and let the kids run around on the large grounds, which include a playground. Meanwhile, Mom and Dad can take a break from the kids at the farm café, which offers stunning panoramic views, and pick up some fresh dairy products from the Uckermark to take home.
