Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve

The Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve is located southwest of the historic town center of Angermünde. The gently rolling landscape here was shaped by the glaciers of the last Ice Age, 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. Extensive forests and a vast open landscape crisscrossed by numerous lakes, ponds, and streams provide a unique habitat for many plant and animal species. The Schorfheide is known for its abundance of wildlife and has been a popular hunting ground for centuries. Black storks, ospreys, and white-tailed eagles nest in the natural forest environment. In the spring, when the snow melts away from the Schorfheide, the calls of wild geese and cranes can be heard far across the countryside, and you can spot the birds in the fields. The NABU Blumberger Mühle Nature Discovery Center is an ideal place to observe animals by the fish ponds and in the outdoor area, discover their tracks, or learn interesting facts about the nature reserve in the exhibition. The Schorfheide offers countless opportunities for biking and hiking. The Uckermärkischer Radrundweg and the Märkischer Landweg trail run through the area.

In the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve around Angermünde, environmentally friendly forms of land use are promoted. A large portion of the agricultural land is farmed organically. At farm stands and farmers’ markets throughout the region, visitors can find regional products and goods from the Uckermark.
