Angermünde invites you to a summer full of history, culture, and enjoyment

Angermünde, a hidden gem with its restored historic old town, located between the Unteres Odertal National Park and the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, invites visitors to enjoy a variety of interesting guided tours and experiences this summer. A special opera premiere awaits guests in August.

This summer, tours rich in culture and enjoyment invite you to visit the small town of Angermünde in the Uckermark region. From May through October, guided tours take place on Fridays (3:00 p.m.) and Saturdays (11:00 a.m.) through this nearly 800-year-old town steeped in history. The theatrical city tours, developed in recent years, bring this history to life. Set against the charming backdrop of the historic old town—between Mündesee, the Franciscan monastery church, and the market fountain—they offer entertaining and atmospheric excursions into the past.

Titled “ABEN(D)TEUERLICHES KETZERANGERMÜNDE,” this tour traces the history of the Angermünde heretics and their inquisitors, the “gray monks.” Featuring Field Marshal Wallenstein, maids, Huguenots, townspeople, and clergy, the theatrical city tour “MAIDS, POWER, AND RELIGIOUS CONTROVERSY” takes you through the town’s turbulent history and recounts its development from the 14th to the 19th century.
As is well known, there’s no accounting for taste—or perhaps it’s a subject for lively debate. The tastes of Angermünde’s builders throughout the ages are evident in the half-timbered houses and imposing fieldstone and brick structures, such as St. Marien Church and the Franciscan monastery church, in interesting details on buildings and along the streets, and not least in the lovingly restored structures in the historic old town. And what does Angermünde taste like, in the truest sense of the word? For example, like fish and the “Naute,” a traditional Angermünde honey pastry. All these elements come together in the city tour “Tasteful Angermünde – Enjoying the Old Town,” which is making its debut this year and takes place on the first Saturday of every month from July through October.

In August, Angermünde becomes a mecca for opera lovers. Set against the historic backdrop of St. Marien Church, the opera “Judith” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Friedrich Hebbel will be performed in a production by U C K E R :: O P E R. This is a very special premiere, the likes of which has never before been seen on German stages: With music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from his 1771 oratorio “La Betulia Liberata” (“The Liberated Bethulia”) and libretto from Friedrich Hebbel’s 1841 play “Judith,” U C K E R :: O P E R presents a completely new and exciting musical theater production, created through close collaboration between professional artists and dedicated amateurs from Angermünde and the Uckermark region.

More recent music will be featured on September 9, when, under the title “A Poet Once Said,” songs by and texts about GDR music legend Holger Biege will be performed. Author Wolfgang Martin will read from his biography of Biege, and Gerd Christian will sing his brother’s magnificent songs. All of this will take place in the idyllic Bürgergarten at Haus Uckermark, with a view of the magnificent St. Mary’s Church or the original directional sign at Angermünde train station dating from around 1900.

With its herb beds and flowers, the garden offers a special setting in the heart of Angermünde’s historic old town during the summer for concerts, theater performances, or open-air movies.

Of course, there are even more things to make your stay in Angermünde an unforgettable experience: the Mündeseepromenade, which serves as a large open-air gallery, for example, the nearby Wolletzsee, the NABU Information Center at Blumberger Mühle, and a wide variety of vendors offering regional products, food, and drinks—all of which invite you to enjoy a summery Angermünde experience with the whole family.

A day in Angermünde is also a wonderful detour for anyone cycling along the Oder-Neiße-Radweg or the Berlin – Usedom, hiking the Märkischer Landweg, making a pilgrimage along the Berlin–Szczecin Jakobsweg, or exploring one of the many other charming regional cycling and hiking trails in the Uckermark.

Angermünde is easily accessible by public transportation for a day trip or a weekend getaway from Berlin or Szczecin.
